Muse said his firm's estimate of flat to 4 percent sequential growth for the semiconductor industry in 2012 is in line with to slightly lower than expected worldwide GDP growth.

Barclays' forecast for chip growth is slightly lower than the firm's previous forecast for 2012, which called for growth of 2 to 5 percent for the year. Muse said. According to Muse, the downward revision was made to reflect the ongoing inventory adjustment lasting into the first quarter of 2012 and estimated worldwide GDP growth of 3.3 percent expected for the year.

The discoveries, made by teams led by the University of Oxford, University of Southampton, the National Oceanography Centre, and British Antarctic Survey, include new species of yeti crab, starfish, barnacles, and sea anemones, and even an octopus probably new to science.

For the first time researchers, using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), have been able to explore the East Scotia Ridge deep beneath the Southern Ocean where hydrothermal vents, including 'black smokers' reaching temperatures of up to 382 degrees Celsius, create a unique environment lacking sunlight but rich in certain chemicals.

The team report their findings in this week's PLoS Biology.

'Hydrothermal vents are home to animals found nowhere else on the planet that get their energy not from the Sun but from breaking down chemicals, such as hydrogen sulphide,' said Professor Alex Rogers of Oxford University's Department of Zoology, who led the research. 'The first survey of these particular vents, in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica, has revealed a hot, dark, 'lost world' in which whole communities of previously unknown marine organisms thrive.'

Highlights from the ROV dives include images showing huge colonies of the new species of yeti crab, thought to dominate the Antarctic vent ecosystem, clustered around vent chimneys. Elsewhere the ROV spotted numbers of an undescribed predatory seastar with seven arms crawling across fields of stalked barnacles and found an unidentified pale octopus nearly 2,400 metres down on the seafloor.

'What we didn't find is almost as surprising as what we did,' said Professor Rogers. 'Many animals such as tubeworms, vent mussels, vent crabs, and vent shrimps, found in hydrothermal vents in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, simply weren't there.'

The team believe that the differences between the groups of animals found around the Antarctic vents and those found around vents elsewhere suggest that the Southern Ocean may act as a barrier to some vent animals. The unique species of the East Scotia Ridge also suggest that, globally, vent ecosystems may be much more diverse, and their interactions more complex, than previously thought.

In April Professor Rogers was part of an international panel of marine scientists who gathered at Somerville College, Oxford to consider the latest research on the world's oceans. A preliminary report from the panel in June warned that the world's oceans are at risk of entering a phase of extinction of marine species unprecedented in human history.

'These findings are yet more evidence of the precious diversity to be found throughout the world's oceans,' said Professor Rogers. 'Everywhere we look, whether it is in the sunlit coral reefs of tropical waters or these Antarctic vents shrouded in eternal darkness, we find unique ecosystems that we need to understand and protect.'

ROV dives were conducted with the help of the crews of RRS James Cook and RRS James Clark Ross. The discoveries were made as part of a consortium project with partners from the University of Oxford, University of Southampton, University of Bristol, Newcastle University, British Antarctic Survey, National Oceanography Centre, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution supported by the UK's Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the US National Science Foundation (NSF).

A report of the research, entitled 'The discovery of new deep-sea hydrothermal vent communities in the Southern Ocean and implications for biogeography', is published this week in PLoS Biology.

Aehr Test names new CEO

SAN FRANCISCO—Semiconductor test and burn-in equipment supplier Aehr Test Systems Inc. Tuesday (Jan. 3) appointed Gayn Erickson, a 23-year veteran of the semiconductor test industry, to the position of CEO. Erickson was also named to the company's board of directors.

Erickson replaces Rhea Posedel, Aehr's founder and chairman, as CEO. According to Aehr (Fremont, Calif.), Posedel led the search for his replacement and has been appointed the company's executive chairman.

"I have been with Aehr Test since its beginning, having founded the company 34 years ago, and felt that now was the right time to turn the company's leadership over to a new CEO," said Posedel, in a statement. "We have been fortunate in attracting Gayn Erickson to assume this position."

Most recently, Erickson served as corporate officer and senior vice president & general manager of Verigy's memory test business before it was acquired by Advantest Japan last year, Aher said. Ex-Energy Conversion chief named COO of Brooks

SAN FRANCISCO—Semiconductor equipment vendor Brooks Automation Inc. Tuesday (Jan. 3) appointed Mark Morelli, formerly CEO of solar equipment provider Energy Conversion Devices Inc., to the role of executive vice president and chief operating officer, effective immediately.

Morelli, 47, will have responsibility for all of Brooks' business units, the company said.

Morelli resigned his post as CEO of Energy Conversion Devices last May amid declining earnings. The company simultaneously announced it would cut its workforce by 20 percent at the time of Morelli's resignation.

Prior to his stint at Energy Conversion Devices, Morelli spent 15 years at United Technologies Corp. in domestic and international roles of increasing scope and responsibility, culminating in his appointment as the president of the company's Carrier Commercial Refrigeration business, Brooks said.

"Adding Mark's extensive experience allows us greater focus on growth initiatives, customer satisfaction, shareholder interests and optimizing Brooks for peak performance," said Steve Schwartz, CEO of Brooks, in a statement.

Engineers arrested for selling Intel test CPUs on eBay

SAN FRANCISCO--Four engineers have been arrested by Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) for allegedly selling off Intel Corp. CPU samples on eBay for personal financial gain.

The CIB released a statement on Monday (Jan. 1) saying the four, confirmed to be engineers working for Intel's OEM manufacturers in Taiwan, had been apprehended in the city of Taoyuan.

Detectives had been tracking the suspects since September, conducting a raid on their homes last month, taking 178 sample CPUs – worth an estimated $82,500—into police custody.

According to the CIB’s statement, the suspects admitted to selling more than 500 Intel engineering sample CPUs since 2009.

The samples, of the sort usually sent out to OEM manufacturers before commercial releases, were beta version integrated circuits designed for compatibility qualification tests, the CIB said.

OEMs typically buy the samples cheaply and use them for testing and development, but only after signing a host of non-disclosure agreements, including commitments not to sell the chips on.

Being engineering samples, the CPUs were sometimes of a rare type, said the CIB, making them all the more desirable to tinkerers looking for chips with unlocked multipliers.

The Taiwanese agency is now strongly urging people not to buy any more of the engineering sample CPUs online and reminded engineers thinking of running similar profit schemes that they could face up to five years in prison if caught.

Previous research has revealed stem cell dysfunction, such as poor replication and differentiation, in a variety of tissues in old age, but it's not been clear whether that loss of function contributed to the aging process or was a result of it, explained senior investigators Johnny Huard, Ph.D., and Laura Niedernhofer, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Huard is professor in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Pitt School of Medicine, and director of the Stem Cell Research Center at Pitt and Children's Hospital of PIttsburgh of UPMC. Dr. Niedernhofer is associate professor in Pitt's Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI).

"Our experiments showed that mice that have progeria, a disorder of premature aging, were healthier and lived longer after an injection of stem cells from young, healthy animals," Dr. Niedernhofer said. "That tells us that stem cell dysfunction is a cause of the changes we see with aging."

Their team examined a stem/progenitor cell population derived from the muscle of progeria mice and found that compared to those from normal rodents, the cells were fewer in number, did not replicate as often, didn't differentiate as readily into specialized cells and were impaired in their ability to regenerate damaged muscle. The same defects were discovered in the stem/progenitor cells isolated from very old mice.

"We wanted to see if we could rescue these rapidly aging animals, so we injected stem/progenitor cells from young, healthy mice into the abdomens of 17-day-old progeria mice," Dr. Huard said. "Typically the progeria mice die at around 21 to 28 days of age, but the treated animals lived far longer -- some even lived beyond 66 days. They also were in better general health."

As the progeria mice age, they lose muscle mass in their hind limbs, hunch over, tremble, and move slowly and awkwardly. Affected mice that got a shot of stem cells just before showing the first signs of aging were more like normal mice, and they grew almost as large. Closer examination showed new blood vessel growth in the brain and muscle, even though the stem/progenitor cells weren't detected in those tissues.

In fact, the cells didn't migrate to any particular tissue after injection into the abdomen.

"This leads us to think that healthy cells secrete factors to create an environment that help correct the dysfunction present in the native stem cell population and aged tissue," Dr. Niedernhofer said. "In a culture dish experiment, we put young stem cells close to, but not touching, progeria stem cells, and the unhealthy cells functionally improved."

Animals that age normally were not treated with stem/progenitor cells, but the provocative findings urge further research, she added. They hint that it might be possible one day to forestall the biological declines associated with aging by delivering a shot of youthful vigor, particularly if specific rejuvenating proteins or molecules produced by the stem cells could be identified and isolated.

Co-authors from the University of Pittsburgh include Mitra Lavasani, Ph.D., Aiping Lu, M.D., and Minjung Song, Ph.D., all of the Stem Cell Research Center and the Department of Orthopaedics; Andria Robinson, of UPCI and Pitt's Graduate School of Public Health; Joseph M. Feduska and Bahar Ahani of the Stem Cell Research Center; Jeremy S. Tilstra, Ph.D., and Chelsea H. Feldman of Pitt's Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics; and Paul D. Ad attendere i migliori fondisti del pianeta c’è una Val di Fiemme vestita di bianco, grazie anche alla nevicata di questa notte che ha portato oltre 20 centimetri di neve nel fondovalle, e molta di più in quota. LCD is now a strong competitive technology at all sizes and should climb to more than 95 percent share by 2014 as CRT fades and OLED is slow to grow.

ITC to probe Elpida complaint against Nanya

SAN FRANCISCO—The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will launch an investigation based on a complaint filed by Elpida Memory Inc. and its U.S. subsidiary against rival DRAM vendor Nanya Technology Corp. and its U.S. subsidiary, the ITC said last month.

The ITC said the investigation is based on a complaint filed by Elpida on Nov. 15, 2011, which alleges violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the United States and sale of certain semiconductor chips with DRAM circuitry and modules and products containing same that infringe patents asserted by the complainants. Elipda requested that the ITC issue an exclusion order and cease and desist orders barring the importation of the Nanya chips, the ITC said.

As is typical, the ITC said it expects to make a final determination in the investigation at the earliest practicable time and that it would set a target date for completion within 45 days of the investigation's launch.

Nanya also filed a complaint against Elipda at the ITC in November, about a week after Elipda filed its complaint against Nanya. It is unclear if the ITC plans to investigate that complaint.

"We have long known that when small dwarf galaxies fall into bigger galaxies, elongated streams, or tails, of stars are pulled out of the dwarf by the enormous tidal field," said Sergey Koposov.

The Sagittarius dwarf galaxy used to be one of the brightest of the Milky Way satellites. Its disrupted remnant now lies on the other side of the Galaxy, breaking up as it is crushed and stretched by huge tidal forces. It is so small that it has lost half of its stars and all its gas over the last billion years.

Before SDSS-III, Sagittarius was known to have two tails, one in front of and one behind the remnant. Previous SDSS imaging had already found the Sagittarius tidal tail in the Northern Galactic sky in 2006 and revealed that one of the tails was forked into two.

"That was an amazing discovery," said Vasily Belokurov, from the University's Institute of Astronomy, "but the remaining piece of the puzzle, the structure in the South, was missing until now."

Sergey Koposov and colleagues analysed density maps of over 13 million stars in the latest release of Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, including the crucial coverage of the Southern Galactic sky. The new data show that the Sagittarius stream in the South is also split into two, a fatter and brighter stream alongside a thinner and fainter stream. This brighter stream is more enriched with iron and other metals than its dimmer companion. Because each generation of stars makes and distributes more metals into the next generation, the Cambridge astronomers concluded that the brighter stream is younger than the older, fainter one.

"Sagittarius is like a beast with four tails," observed Wyn Evans, from the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge University.

No one knows the mechanism that caused the splitting of the tidal tails. However, scientists believe that perhaps the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy was once a part of a binary galactic system, similar to the present day Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Each of these could have produced a leading and trailing tail on falling into the Milky Way Galaxy, yielding four in all.

But co-author Geraint Lewis of Sydney University has another idea. He says "Perhaps the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy has suffered an encounter with an object in the game of Galactic billiards. Maybe a collision with a massive clump of dark matter, or even another satellite galaxy, has split each of the streams into two."

A final theory suggests that, just as meteors have spread into different streams through evolution in the Solar system, debris from Sagittarius may have spread into different streams at different points in time. Different epochs may suffer different amounts of precession in the Galaxy, causing the split streams. "I have been running hundreds of simulations of the disruption of the Sagittarius dwarf and this idea looks very plausible," commented Jorge Penarrubia of the IAA, Granada, who was also involved in the study.

Whatever the explanation, SDSS-III has provided a wealth of new information on the engorgement of the Sagittarius galaxy. The disruption of smaller galaxies has occurred many times in the history of the Milky Way and other galaxies like ours throughout the Universe.

The note added that rumors had been rife about Elpida; that it had been seeking a renewed bail-out from the Japanese government but also of Toshiba taking over the DRAM vendor. Elpida has been getting support from DRAM module partners Kingston Technology Company Inc. (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Powertech Technology Inc. (Taipei, Taiwan), the report said.

DRAMexchange said that the Japanese government is eager to help negotiate a partnership between Toshiba and Elpida in the belief that a converged DRAM and NAND flash memory strategy will better target tablet computers and solid-state disc drives and mimic what the South Korean giants have done. Both Samsung and Hynix make both DRAM and flash memory.

Forty-five companies raised $5.4 billion through public offerings in 2011, up from $3.3 billion raised in 46 IPOs in 2010. Web 2.0 darlings Groupon and Zynga skewed the results with IPOs that netted a combined $1.7 billion.

Currently 60 U.S. startups are in registration for an IPO. Thirteen filed in the last quarter of 2011.

Startups raised more money to get to an IPO, but took less time getting there in 2011. The median amount raised for an IPO increased 17 percent to $85 million in 2011, but the average IPO came when the startup was 6.5 years old compared to 8.1 years in 2010.

"During 2012 we'll get a sense of whether the last two years of flat IPO activity is the new normal for the industry or if there is room to grow," said Zoran Basich, editor of Dow Jones Venture Wire, speaking in a press statement.

Nei giorni scorsi lo Stadio del Salto “Giuseppe dal Ben” di Predazzo (TN) ha aperto ufficialmente la sua stagione invernale con l’assegnazione dei titoli tricolori di combinata nordica, di salto speciale femminile e di salto speciale e combinata categoria juniores. Si attendevano i risultati dei big e non sono tardati ad arrivare: Alessandro Pittin ed Evelyn Insam si sono laurearti a pieni voti nuovi campioni nazionali rispettivamente di combinata e salto femminile.
