CompactFlash successor: XQD memory cards Electronics News

COMPACTFLASH Association has announced the successor of its CompactFlash (CF) memory cards: the XQD.

CF has had a fairly stable role within the plethora of competing memory card formats. In recent years, SD has emerged as a strong competitor, but CF cards are still used in many professional-level devices.

Faced with speed and capacity boosts from the SD camp, the CompactFlash Association says XQD specifications will act as the new high performance memory card.

XQD specifications are based on PCI Express, which is generally recognised as being scalable into the future. It will provide 2.5Gbps throughput on launch, with plans to boost speeds to 5Gbps.

Actual write speeds are targeted to 125Mb/sec and higher.

The key features of the XQD format include:

  • Optimized form-factor
  • Dimensions : 38.5 x 29.8  x 3.8mm
  • Durable and robust
