Commenting on the ICO's call for a rethink on location privacy, Cryptzone says that geo-location tagging security issues are likely to be a major issue in 2012 - and that many users of smartphones are unaware of the potentially serious security consequences of their use of the technology.

According to Grant Taylor, vice president of the IT security and compliance specialist, now that most smartphones have native GPS/satnav features, the default setting for most pictures – and videos – taken with these devices is to embed the GPS co-ordinates along with the date and time that the image was taken.

"And when smartphones upload these images to the Internet – to portals such Facebook or Flickr – there's a strong chance they will also upload the GPS data as well. This information could be subsequently misused by third parties, perhaps for stalking purposes, or even cybercrime," he said.

"As Jonathan Bamford, the ICO's head of strategic liaison said at a conference earlier this month, since most human activities online have a location aspect, this brings both opportunities and significant risks," he added.

The vice president of Cryptzone went on to say that cybercriminals are now starting to crowdsource information that is available on the Internet - using open source software such as Maltego - and then tying in geo-location data from photos.

Then, he says, you also have sites such as Youhavedownloaded.com – an open source data site that lists the IP addresses of around 20 per cent of files that have been shared across the Internet.

The challenge of the project, in particular, lies in the verification of distributed functions. Their complexity arises from the combination of very diverse services available in the web and the possibility to change these peripherally at any time. The correct and estimated functioning of these systems is to be verified permanently through the right strategy for continuous tests. The evaluation of the FITTEST results runs in case studies carried out by partners involved in the development project. The project, launched a year ago, has already delivered first findings: The solution for testing web applications mainly lies in the development of improved test methods.

"The automotive industry is not only interested in new car-to-x services, but also in the future integration of independently developed apps into vehicles," says Dr. Joachim Wegener, Head of the Automotive Department at Berner & Mattner. "In the FITTEST project, we are analyzing the combination of systematic and search-based approaches for test case generation. For the function-oriented test, we use the classification tree method by applying, for instance, CTE XL Professional. As part of the project, we also examine the application of CTE XL Professional for search-based extensions for test case generation sequences."

FITTEST is funded in part by the EUs 7th Framework Programme. Berner & Mattner contributes its experience in systematic and search-based test methods to the research project, coordinated by Dr. Tanja Vos from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. Other participants include the University College London, Universiteit Utrecht, the Italian research institute Fondazione Bruno Kessler, the French developer SOFTEAM, IBM Israel - Science and Technology Ltd. and the Finnish social entertainment specialist Sulake.

The project is scheduled to run until August 31, 2013.

EU research project looks into testing of distributed functions over the Internet

Jumping droplets take a lot of heat, as long as it comes in a cool way

Duke University engineers have developed a new way of producing thermal diodes, devices which regulate heat to preferentially flow in a certain direction, effectively creating a thermal conductor in the forward direction and an insulator in the reverse direction. While thermal diodes can be made from solid materials, these solid-state diodes are not nearly as effective as "phase-change" thermal diodes that rely on vaporization and condensation to transport heat.

These phase-change diodes can transfer over a hundred times more heat in the forward direction compared to the reverse, but with major limitations -- they are dependent on gravity or restricted by a tubular configuration. These limitations severely constrain the application of phase-change thermal diodes, for example, in mobile electronics which require orientation independence or solar panels which require a large surface area.

The Duke engineers believe they have figured out a way to solve these limitations to existing thermal diodes by exploiting self-propelled water droplets, which can jump from a superhydrophobic (highly water-repellent) surface to a superhydrophilic (highly absorbent) surface, but not the other way around. The results of the Duke experiments were published online in the journal Applied Physical Letters.

Chuan-Hua Chen, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, and his research group was the first to actually videotape the self-propelled jumping motion of water droplets on a superhydrophobic surface. They found that the droplets literally jumped straight up and off the surface. In their current experiments, a superhydrophilic plate was placed opposite to the superhydrophobic one, creating an asymmetry crucial for the directional transport of heat in their thermal diode.

"When the superhydrophobic surface is colder than the superhydrophilic surface, the heat transport is very effective with phase-change processes, much like sweat taking away body heat; when the superhydrophobic surface is hotter, the heat flow is blocked and the diode behaves like a double-paned window," said Chen. "Because the jumping droplets in our system are very small, gravity has negligible effect on them. Therefore, devices based on this approach can be oriented in any direction without the need to worry about gravity."

Furthermore, Chen said, this approach can be easily scalable, which means technology based on this design can be used for thermal management of devices as small as computer chips and as large as building roofs. The jumping-drop approach uniquely combines large-area scalability, orientation independence, and effective thermal rectification into one device. This combination of properties is extremely useful for thermal diodes but has remained elusive until Chen's invention.

Typical phase-change thermal diodes rely on evaporating water to transfer heat from one surface to another, with gravity pulling the subsequent condensate down to restart the cycle again. For example, these so-called thermosyphons are in use in the Alaskan oil pipeline, in order to keep the heat from the pipes from melting the permafrost.

Chen believes that this new approach could make thermal diodes more practical and effective for a variety of applications. These applications range from energy-efficient solar panels to smart "skins" of thermally adaptive buildings. For example, in the summertime a diode panel on a building could let heat escape out but prevent heat from creeping in. In space vehicles, thermal diodes can be used to regulate diurnal thermal fluctuations in the outer space, or even to harvest solar energy for powering satellites.

IDT International Limited is claiming to have developed the world's first Bluetooth low energy (or Bluetooth Smart) blood pressure monitor, which is expected to be ready to go into volume production by March 2012 after receiving final US FDA and MDD (Europe) medical certification.

The blood pressure monitor features Nordic Semiconductor's nRF8001's class-leading ultra-low power performance has enabled IDT to achieve the same 4-6 month operating life from four AA batteries for its Bluetooth low energy blood pressure monitor as its existing standalone designs under typical operating conditions (2x readings per day).

Any smartphone, computer, or health hub designated as Bluetooth version 4.0 Smart Ready can now use the new blood pressure monitor to communicate with a wireless Bluetooth low energy/Smart blood pressure monitor and send collected (systolic and diastolic) data via SMS or email to healthcare providers - or even just concerned relatives - including automatically alerting any unusually high or low readings immediately.

The device will also record the user's resting pulse and detect any irregularities in their heart beat, allowing these parameters to be remotely monitored too, can support two separate users, and give voice instructions and readings to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations (such as "your blood pressure is normal, slightly high, or high").

"We see our Bluetooth low energy blood pressure monitor as a game changer for the consumer mobile health market," states Danny Leung, Engineering Manager of IDT's medical and sports & fitness division. "It can be used by anyone [the end user has to do nothing more than put the cuff on their upper arm and press a button] and means that for the first time collected data can be sent via SMS or email to remote locations using a device that in many cases the user will already own [e.g. a smartphone or computer] and be able to use for no additional cost."

"This means mass-market, low cost remote blood pressure monitoring for all suddenly becomes a commercial reality," adds Geir Langeland, Nordic Semiconductor's Director of Sales & Marketing. "And this will be a welcome development for already critically over-stretched healthcare providers and agencies looking for new ways to cope with hypertension issues caused by a rapidly aging population [everyone is at risk of developing high blood pressure as they age] and explosion in lifestyle-related high blood pressure risk factors such as obesity."

"But medical will not be the only use case, and I expect Bluetooth low energy blood pressure monitors will spur the development of a whole new range of consumer-targeted Bluetooth low energy-based health and medical apps that could include new ways of collecting, interpreting, and displaying blood pressure data - including even motivational social media-based data and progress sharing where blood pressure and indeed resting pulse become as universally accepted health parameters as weight and body fat are today."

Solution-based fabrication techniques for flex and stretch electronics

Imprinting electronic circuitry on backplanes that are both flexible and stretchable promises to revolutionize a number of industries and make "smart devices" nearly ubiquitous. Among the applications that have been envisioned are electronic pads that could be folded away like paper, coatings that could monitor surfaces for cracks and other structural failures, medical bandages that could treat infections and food packaging that could detect spoilage.

From solar cells to pacemakers to clothing, the list of smart applications for so-called "plastic electronics" is both flexible and stretchable. First, however, suitable backplanes must be mass-produced in a cost-effective way. Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have developed a promising new inexpensive technique for fabricating large-scale flexible and stretchable backplanes using semiconductor-enriched carbon nanotube solutions that yield networks of thin film transistors with superb electrical properties, including a charge carrier mobility that is dramatically higher than that of organic counterparts. To demonstrate the utility of their carbon nanotube backplanes, the researchers constructed an artificial electronic skin (e-skin) capable of detecting and responding to touch.

"With our solution-based processing technology, we have produced mechanically flexible and stretchable active-matrix backplanes, based on fully passivated and highly uniform arrays of thin film transistors made from single walled carbon nanotubes that evenly cover areas of approximately 56 square centimeters," says Ali Javey, a faculty scientist in Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division and a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California (UC) Berkeley. "This technology, in combination with inkjet printing of metal contacts, should provide lithography-free fabrication of low-cost flexible and stretchable electronics in the future."

Javey is the corresponding author of a paper in the journal NanoLetters that describes this work titled "Carbon Nanotube Active-Matrix Backplanes for Conformal Electronics and Sensors." Co-authoring this paper were Toshitake Takahashi, Kuniharu Takei, Andrew Gillies and Ronald Fearing.

With the demand for plastic electronics so high, research and development in this area has been intense over the past decade. Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have emerged as one of the top contending semiconductor materials for plastic electronics, primarily because they feature high mobility for electrons - a measure of how fast a semiconductor conducts electricity. However, SWNTs can take the form of either a semiconductor or a metal and a typical SWNT solution consists of two-thirds semiconducting and one-third metallic tubes. This mix yields nanotube networks that exhibit low on/off current ratios, which poses a major problem for electronic applications as lead author of the NanoLetters paper Takahashi explains.

"An on/off current ratio as high as possible is essential for reducing the interruption from pixels in an off-state," he says. "For example, with our e-skin device, when we are pressure mapping, we want to get the signal only from the on-state pixel on which pressure is applied. In other words, we want to minimize the current as small as possible from the other pixels which are supposed to be turned off. For this we need a high on/off current ratio."

To make their backplanes, Javey, Takahashi and their co-authors used a SWNT solution enriched to be 99-percent semiconductor tubes. This highly purified solution provided the researchers with a high on/off ratio (approximately 100) for their backplanes. Working with a thin substrate of polymide, a high-strength polymer with superior flexibility, they laser-cut a honeycomb pattern of hexagonal holes that made the substrate stretchable as well. The holes were cut with a fixed pitch of 3.3 millimeters and a varied hole-side length that ranged from 1.0 to 1.85 millimeters.

"The degree to which the substrate could be stretched increased from 0 to 60-percent as the side length of the hexagonal holes increased to 1.85 mm," Takahashi says. "In the future, the degrees of stretchability and directionality should be tunable by either changing the hole size or optimizing the mesh design."

Backplanes were completed with the deposition on the substrates of layers of silicon and aluminium oxides followed by the semiconductor-enriched SWNTs. The resulting SWNT thin film transistor backplanes were used to create e-skin for spatial pressure mapping. The e-skin consisted of an array of 96 sensor pixels, measuring 24 square centimeters in area, with each pixel being actively controlled by a single thin film transistor. To demonstrate pressure mapping, an L-shaped weight was placed on top of the e-skin sensor array with the normal pressure of approximately 15 kilo Pascals (313 pounds per square foot).

"In the linear operation regime, the measured sensor sensitivity reflected a threefold improvement compared with previous nanowire-based e-skin sensors reported last year by our group," Takahashi says. "This improved sensitivity was a result of the improved device performance of the SWNT backplanes. In the future we should be able to expand our backplane technology by adding various sensor and/or other active device components to enable multifunctional artificial skins. IEEE 802.15.4 IC market to exceed $1.1 billion in 2016

The IEEE 802.15.4 IC market will grow to over $1.1 billion in 2016 — up from just $90 million in 2010. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is still a key adoption market and there is significant impetus behind the continuation of this market.

Some concerns have been raised around mass deployments ahead of IP support and the planned ZigBee Smart Energy 2.0, but recent announcements by ZigBee to migrate its portfolio of profiles into IP-based solutions should allay such concerns.

The home entertainment market has also seen significant uptake, helping to drive up shipment numbers over the past twelve months or so with the development and adoption of ZigBee RF4CE. Initial products leveraging 802.15.4 are still led by P2P deployments using proprietary software stacks but the transition to standard software implementations is well underway and the market positions of both approaches will be reversed by the end of the forecast period with standardized implementations dominating. In addition, P2P deployments also dominate usage, but that too will shift over to mesh network configurations during the forecast period.

Chipset shipment will continue to grow at expanding rates as the 802.15.4 technology reaches a level of deployment maturity and price point that enables WSN to extend more broadly across markets, not just in AMI and home entertainment, where the bulk of the market is currently, but also across the building automation and healthcare sectors around the world. New markets are also emerging, such as traffic monitoring, smart parking, and flood alert systems within the smart city concept.

Kelvin Chan, industry analyst, comments, "Standard WSN protocols based on IEEE 802.15.4 will face a confluence of challenges from existing wireless technologies such as Low Power Wi-Fi, Low Energy Bluetooth, and a more recent addition, Low Energy DECT, as these technologies look to capitalize on their installed base and ubiquity stature, especially in the home area network (HAN) environment, to penetrate the smart energy market segment."

ABI Research's study "Wireless Sensor Networks," analyzes IEEE 802.15.4 and which standards, such as ZigBee, Wireless HART, and ISA100.11a, will influence and drive the market, as well as emerging technology and competitive solutions such as Z-Wave, 6LoWPAN, Low Energy Bluetooth, and Low Power Wi-Fi.
