Now of course, there is never any certain way to make sure your watch has never been worked on by watch makers uncertified by that specific watch house, but you will find that most owners of vintage watches tend to take care when it comes to their watches warranty and integrity.

The Breitling Windrider collection was formerly the Chronoliner and Nightflight collections that have now been amalgamated into this collection. Most of the watches have automatic, mechanical movements, however some, especially the ladies' watches, have a quartz movement - I've been told that making complicated mechanical movements small enough for a ladies watch is very hard and would make the price of a watch extremely expensive.

The Chronomat Evolution is the flagship watch of Breitling and is its number one best seller. It was originally created to equip the famous Frecce Tricolori flight team of the Italian airforce. Over the years the watch has evolved aesthetically and technically. Some would arguethat the currunt Evolution watch is the most accomplished to date. The present design has beenin production since 2005. Like most watches in the collection, it has 3 subdials; second hand, 10 minute interval and 3 hour interval. The dials are placed at the 6, 9 and 12 o'clock positions. The mechanical movement is the ETA Valjoux 7750. The casing diameter is 43.7mm and is 17.1mm thick.

The Chronomat Blackbird has a brushed finish unlike the polished finish of the other Chronomat watches. The matte black dial is also in contrast the typical gloss dials of this collection. All this gives the watch a very understated appearance. The casing diameter is 39.8mm with a thickness of 14.8mm. The movement and dial placement is the same as the Evolution.

The Crosswind is a more lavish affair, with an elaborate raised dial face complete with Roman numerals; the numerals and the six hands are luminous. Some versions come with diamonds mounted on the bezel. Again, dial placement and movement are the same as the Evolution.

The Callistino is a Breitling ladies watch. It features a quartz movement and diamonds mounted on the dial face at the hour markers. The casing diameter is 29mm and is 10.6mm thick. The Callisto is another ladies watch. Its main point of interest is the absence of subdials, thought the date aperture remains at the 3 o'clock position. Again, it features a quartz movement. For those wanting a mechanical movement, the Chrono Callisto should fit the bill. The movement is a Lemania 1873. However, this movement is not automatic. The mechanical movement also makes this ladies watch a little larger; the casing is 35mm wide. There are 3 subdials.

Finally, my favorite Breitling watch, the Windrider Shadow Flyback - it's the model I bought instead of the Tag Heuer. It has an ETA 2892-A2 movement featuring chronograph and a flyback feature (stop watch secondhand return to zero). The subdials are what as known as a tri compax configuration - positioned at the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock position. What I also like is that the date aperture appears between 4 and 5 o'clock.

Since 1860 TAG Heuer has been making luxury watches, specifically sporty looking chronographs, but lately it seems as though this Swiss company is making more luxury cellular phones than it is men's and women's watches.

In September of this year TAG released the Meridiist to not so rave reviews. There is a huge variety of cell phones to choose from and when it came to basic specs, the Meridiist didn't go above and beyond (except of course in looks and price tag). It came with a 1.9" QVGA main screen, monochrome OLED on its outer rim, 2-megapixel camera, MP3/AAC/MPEG-4 playback, and 7 hours of battery time, which is standard in most phones. It's made of corrosion-resistant, watch-making steel and comes with a back of crocodile, leather or rubber; all reflective of that fact that it is branded: TAG Heuer, as these are common materials used in the bands and straps of luxury watches. Who came up with the price of $5,300 to $6,100 is the question?

There are many TAG watches that are available for less than this. In fact, practically every TAG collection of men's and women's watches has pieces for way under $5,000. Check out the TAG Heuer Aquaracer, Carrera, Grand Carrera and Formula 1 collections to see what I mean.

Soon after releasing the Meridiist, TAG came up with a way to make it better, fancier, more exclusive; basically to add some bling and jack up the price tag. The same phone which was selling for $5,000 and up is now going for between $10,000 and $30,000. What?! It's common knowledge that luxury watches can sell for this amount, but who's heard of a cell phone entering this price range. Called the Meridiist Diamant, the phones are available in two styles; one with 208 diamonds or the "imperial regalia of mobile phones" and one with 1232 diamonds. TAG Heuer admitted that these phones would be marketed toward women. And to make this phone seem like a piece of coveted jewelry, TAG was placing each Meridiist Diamant in a wooden jewelry box, "in which to preserve and store your investment for future generations." Saving diamonds is one thing, but come on; the idea of saving a cell phone for the next generation is ridiculous being that the technology changes and gets constantly upgraded.

So, now fast forward almost two months later and TAG Heuer launches yet another version of its Meridiist cell phone, this time really upping the ante (aka the price tag) by partnering with Italian luxury automobile brand Lamborghini.

Called the TAG Heuer MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini, only 1,963 of these quad-band Bluetooth phones will be sold worldwide. The number is a tribute to the year that Lamborghini was founded.

The inspiration for the phone's design comes from the Murcielago (which means "bat") by Lamborghini; one of its sleekest, fastest and most exclusive cars. The phone measures about 4.5 inches by 1.8 inches, has an above-average battery life: seven hours of talk time or 28 days of standby power. Standard cell phone features include a WAP 2.0 Web browser, a 2-megapixel camera, and 2GB of internal memory.

The handset is made from "black titanium carbide coated 316L stainless steel" and has the Murcielago signature on the battery cover, which is similar to the one seen on this car's LP 640's V12 engine block. The case is made from brushed stainless steel (a metal often used in TAG watches) and has a "backlit mechanical stainless steel keypad customized with Automobili Lamborghini's trademark Taurus bull on the steel central button." The display is made from scratch resistant sapphire crystal, another common feature of luxury watches. The phone is built by ModeLabs.

Besides these two modifications, the watch is basically the same. The watch can be operated underwater up to 100 feet, it uses the Breitling 26 Caliber mechanical movement with 38 jewels, it possesses a 42 hour power reserve, and it operates at 28,800 vibrations per second.

The last significant aspect of this watch that we will discuss is the bidirectional, rotating slide rule bezel. Back when the original watch was created, many airplane navigators actually used this watch to perform complex calculations to determine their location. While no one needs this functionality anymore (very few of us don't have GPS), it is still neat of Breitling to honor aviation's heritage by keeping this outdated functionality.

Mechanical movements should be wound or in case of automatic movements given enough motion before a dive.

Crystal

Scuba Diving watches have relatively thick watch crystals face. Sometimes domed crystals are used to enhance the pressure resistance of the scuba diving watch. The typical materials used for crystals are acrylic glass, hardened glass and (synthetic) sapphire which all come with own pros and cons.

* Acrylic glass is very break resistant but can easily be scratched but the small scratches can be buffed out with polishing compounds.

This Breitling is a recent addition to the 'wish list' and unfortunately not available to put on the wrist just yet, although it did come close! I liked the look of this new Chronomat when I got a first glimpse of it on Breitling's site earlier in the year and it was showcased at the Baselworld Exhibition in March/April this year. I did a little more research and then finally managed to get to see a piece in the flesh, from that point on I have been hooked! I think if I did not have the good lady with me when I got hold of it in the shop, there would have been no holding me back. The flexible friend would have been whipped out and this would be a review of one of my current pieces rather than a quick post on a watch on the 'nice to have' list!

I currently have two Breitling's, the new Blackbird and a Superocean 38, both of which I love dearly even though Breitling is not my favourite brand. In the past I had looked at the previous Chronomat model and even though I had a full appreciation of the watch I never really gave it a second glance but I have to say this new edition has really caught my eye.

There has been a number of updates and changes from the older Chronomat but the key difference is this watch is powered by a self-winding chronograph movement entirely developed and crafted by Breitling themselves. For Breitling to have a fully 100% in-house chronograph movement is a first for them as it is not something they have done in the past. With this watch Breitling has created a highly exclusive version of its leading Chronomat model which in my opinion has a stunning presence from what I have seen so far. Hopefully in the none to distant future I will be the proud owner of one of these and be able to provide a full review!

A Personal Review Of The Breitling Shadow Flyback

I bought my Breitling watch about 7 years ago and wear it nearly everyday. Despite wearing it nearly every day, having gone diving with it, kiteboarded with it, and trekked across Australia, Scandinavia and the Far East, it looks as good today as the day I bought it.

In all honesty I'd never heard of Breitling watches until I went into a store to buy a Tag Heuer - everyone I knew seemed to be wearing a Tag and it seemed like the ideal watch that could be worn both formally and for sport. Anyhow, while I was in the department store looking at the Tag collections, the assistant said, that if I liked Tag, I might also be interested in Breitling.

Well, it was love at first sight. I know not everyone is going to like Breitling watches. While I think they are beautiful, I can understand why some wouldn't like them. They aren't as 'rounded' as others like Tag or Seconda. Although stylish, they have a certain old fashioned, harder-edged style to them. I learned later that most collections of Breitling watches were designed over 50 years ago and, despite some changes to the movements and minor aesthetic modifications, they are pretty much the same wristwatch as they were 50 years ago.

The Shadow Flyback I bought features an ETA 2892-A2 mechanical movement. The movement is a chronograph, is automatic and has a flyback complication. Most stopwatch second hands can be stopped and then set to zero; with a flyback complication the second hand can be reset to zero without stopping the timer - it continues to run from the zero position. The power reserve of the movement is 42 hours.

Like all watches in the Breitling Windrider collection, the bezel is raised and is unidirectional - it's not a diver's watch where the bezel is one-directional. However, the watch is water resistant to 100mm - I've been diving with this watch to a depth of 20 meters so I can vouch for its water tightness.

Although the dial comes in a few colors, the one I purchased is of a very dark blue which looks black unless seen in sun light. There are 3 subdials; second hand, 10 minute interval and 3 hour interval. The subdials are the same color as the dial and are set in a tri compax configuration, which means they are placed at the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock position. The date aperture is found between the 4 and 5 hour marker. I like this layout as it's the more unusual in the Windrider collection; most other watches come with subdials at the 6, 9 and 12 o'clock position with the date aperture at the 3 hour marker.

The hour markers are just that; there are no numerals, which gives it a very sophisticated look, I think. The markers along with the hour and minute hand are luminous as is the tip of the stopwatch second hand. Incidentally, the stopwatch second hand is nicely counterbalanced with the Breitling 'B' logo.

Finally, this Breitling watch is available in stainless steel, 18k gold or two-tone. Mine is stainless steel (the best finish) and comes with one of the best watch straps you can possibly buy, the Pilot strap; the slightly diagonal, chunky rectangular links really are very attractive.

As I've said I've had the Shadow Flyback for 7 years and apart from some minor scratches on the clasp there isn't a mark on it. Since, buying it I've become a huge fan of Breitling watches and it's my intention, when I save enough money, to buy the Navitimer Comsonaute - another beautiful timepiece.
